Dhaka police have arrested 44 members of the notorious “Patali Gang,” including their second-in-command Shahin, following a savage machete attack that left seven members of a single family severely injured in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.

In a sweeping overnight operation, Mohammadpur police detained 44 individuals affiliated with the infamous youth gang known as “Patali Group,” who were allegedly involved in a violent assault on a family residing in the Ityadi Mor area. The crackdown took place in the Rayerbazar Boatghat area, where the suspects, including top gang member Shahin, were apprehended.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Tarebur Rahman confirmed the arrests, stating that the detainees include known drug dealers, muggers, wanted criminals, and other offenders involved in various illegal activities.

The incident occurred on the night of May 15 when the gang members launched a sudden machete attack on Rabbi’s family outside their home. According to police sources, the confrontation began after two teenagers were spotted loitering near the house. When family members questioned them, the teens reacted aggressively and called reinforcements. Within minutes, 10 to 15 gang members armed with sharp weapons arrived and began attacking indiscriminately.

Afzal Hossain, one of the victims, recounted the horror: “We were sitting in front of our house when two young boys approached suspiciously. When we asked who they were, they became aggressive. After a brief scuffle, they called others from their gang. A few minutes later, a group came with machetes and started attacking us. My arm tendon was slashed, and seven of my family members were seriously injured.”

The injured include Swapan, Sabbir, Rabbi, Kasem, Afzal, Fatema Begum, and Mamun. Four of them remain hospitalized, with Swapan in critical condition, according to hospital sources.

The suspects have been sent to court, and further legal procedures are underway. Police say the crackdown will continue as part of an ongoing effort to dismantle youth gangs operating in the city.
