Shahabaz Ali Sheikh (64), from Koyra in Khulna, has been searching for his daughter Asma Begum (37) for the past 20 days. She went missing along with her two daughters from her in-laws’ house in Phultala upazila, Khulna.
According to Shahabaz Ali, his daughter had long been a victim of domestic abuse by her husband, Milon Khondokar (40). Addicted to alcohol, marijuana, and other narcotics, Milon would frequently beat his wife. He also pressured her with dowry demands, while his gambling and mobile gaming addiction fueled constant unrest in the household.
Nearly 20 years ago, Asma married Milon, the son of the late Mujibur Khondokar of Damodar village in Phultala. They had two daughters together. Despite facing constant abuse and conflict from the start of her marriage, Shahabaz repeatedly persuaded his daughter to stay in her husband’s home.
On August 2, around 8 p.m., Milon phoned his father-in-law to say that Asma had left the house with their two children. Since then, no trace of them has been found. Shahabaz alleges that whenever he seeks information about his daughter, his son-in-law threatens him with intimidation and even death.
Desperate to find her, Shahabaz has filed a General Diary (GD) with Koyra Police Station. He has also announced a reward of Tk 10,000 for anyone who can provide information leading to the discovery of his daughter and granddaughters. Recently, at a press conference organized by the Koyra Journalists’ Forum, he highlighted the disappearance and appealed to the authorities for assistance.
Family members say that Asma’s mother has fallen ill due to grief. She has stopped eating and is breaking down mentally day by day. Meanwhile, Shahabaz Ali continues to knock on doors across the area, tirelessly searching for his missing daughter.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Koyra Police Station, Md. Imdadul Haque, confirmed that a GD has been filed regarding the disappearance and said that the matter is under investigation.
