Bangladesh recorded its first Covid-19 death of the year on Wednesday, as health officials confirmed three new infections in the last 24 hours, signaling a worrying uptick in cases.

A man undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka has died from COVID-19, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This marks the first reported COVID-19 fatality in the country in 2025.

With the latest death, Bangladesh’s official Covid-19 death toll has reached 29,500 since the first fatality was recorded on March 18, 2020.

In the same 24-hour period, 21 samples were tested, of which three returned positive, yielding a daily test positivity rate of 14.29 percent, according to the DGHS’s health emergency operations centre and control room.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country now stands at 20,51,739. Recovery and death rates remained unchanged at 98.42 percent and 1.44 percent, respectively.

Health officials have expressed concern over the steady increase in infections in recent weeks, warning the public to remain cautious and follow hygiene protocols.

Meanwhile, 62 people were admitted to hospitals with dengue in the last 24 hours. However, no new deaths from the mosquito-borne disease were reported during this time.
