There are certain foods that can bring feelings of joy and happiness. Much of our mental health depends on what we eat. Research has shown that certain foods are capable of triggering happiness in the brain. These foods help release “happy hormones” like dopamine and serotonin. Including these foods in your diet reduces stress and increases the secretion of happiness hormones in the body, leading to a better mood.
Happy Hormones and Foods
Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins—these four hormones are known as happiness hormones. To increase the secretion of these hormones, some specific foods should be consumed.
Dopamine
To boost dopamine secretion, eat foods rich in good fats, fermented foods, and fiber. For example:
- Fatty fish and fish oil
- Olive oil
- Yogurt and Water rice (fermented rice)
- Vegetables and seafood
Avoid fried, processed, and packaged foods. Also, staying happy, traveling, wearing your favorite clothes can also increase dopamine levels.
Serotonin
Serotonin controls the movement of intestinal muscles and affects mood, sleep, memory, appetite. To increase its secretion, beneficial foods include:
- Omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods
- Fiber-rich foods
- Foods rich in Vitamin B-12 and Vitamin D
- Cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, flaxseed, chia seeds
A good night’s sleep helps boost serotonin secretion.
Endorphins
Endorphins naturally relieve pain and reduce stress. In addition to dietary habits, regular exercise, laughing, listening to music, engaging in mental relaxation activities are essential for boosting its secretion.
Oxytocin
Oxytocin is produced in the bodies of mammals, especially during childbirth in women. Its secretion is regulated by Vitamin C. So, it’s important to consume foods rich in Vitamin C.
Moreover, there is debate about whether chocolate is good or bad for the body, but there is no doubt that chocolate can improve anyone’s mood. Dark chocolate contains plenty of antioxidants, which are beneficial for enhancing mood. The large amount of tryptophan in chocolate helps keep the body energized.
Healthy Gut and Happiness
One of the most important organs in our body is the small intestine. Unhealthy eating habits can reduce the beneficial bacteria in the gut, leading to increased risks of gas, fatty liver, cholesterol, and constipation.
