National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has alleged negligence on the part of the foreign ministry over the attack on the party’s member secretary Akhter Hossen and other political leaders in New York.
Speaking at an emergency press conference at the party’s central office in the capital’s Bangla Motor on Tuesday, he harshly criticised the government and demanded action against the officials concerned.
Nahid said, “The attack on Akhter Hossen was not an isolated incident. Earlier, adviser Mahfuz Alam and others who support the movement for change have also been harassed both at home and abroad. Senior officials of the administration are directly involved in these incidents.”
He further alleged that the government had failed to take effective measures despite repeated attacks. “Officials of the administration are linked to these incidents, they provide information. There is clear negligence on the part of the foreign ministry, and we want accountability from them,” he added.
Calling for steps to prevent a repeat of such incidents, Nahid demanded the resignation of the New York Consul General and identification of those within the foreign ministry whom he termed as “allies of fascism.”
The press conference was also attended by senior joint member secretary Nahida Sarwer Niva, joint convener Tajnuva Jabeen, joint member secretary (attached to office) Saleh Uddin Sifat, joint member secretary Abdullah Al-Amin, among others.
