The prosecution on Sunday submitted formal charges against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in connection with alleged crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

In a landmark development, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has received formal charges against the trio, marking a historic shift as the trial proceedings are being broadcast live for the first time in the court’s history.

According to tribunal officials, the charges stem from incidents that occurred during the July uprising, where serious allegations of mass violence and rights violations were reported. Prosecutors claim the three held command responsibility for actions deemed crimes against humanity.

Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power earlier, is being tried alongside two of her closest former allies — Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the then home minister, and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the former chief of police — both accused of facilitating or failing to prevent atrocities.

Tribunal prosecutors stated that the evidence includes eyewitness testimonies, forensic documentation, and chain-of-command communications that allegedly implicate the accused in systematic oppression and extrajudicial actions.

Legal experts say this case could set a significant precedent for accountability involving high-ranking officials. While critics view the tribunal as politically motivated, rights organizations have long demanded justice for the victims of the uprising.

The tribunal has scheduled a preliminary hearing for next week, where the admissibility of the charges will be reviewed.

The ICT’s decision to livestream the proceedings is being seen as a move toward greater transparency amid growing public and international interest in the case.

Further details are expected as the trial progresses.
