Former chief of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) Masud Biswas was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Saturday. Masud allegedly amassed Tk 1.87 crore in illegal wealth and retained it under his control.
Masud is accused of accepting bribes to conceal problems rather than reporting them to law enforcement, as well as being involved in dubious aircraft purchases for Sky Capital Airlines Limited.
Additionally, he is charged with improperly managing a money laundering investigation involving NRB Commercial Bank chairman Tamal Parvez, in which he filed a report as a general observation rather than in accordance with the 2019 Money Laundering Prevention Rules.
Masud allegedly lifted a suspension in exchange for money in order to meddle in transactions concerning Himadri Limited. He benefited personally by failing to notify law enforcement of evidence of fraud and money laundering involving Tanaka Group, SA Group, and Anwar Group.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) assisted in the arrest during an operation today, January 18 – according to the ACC Deputy Director.
