Police today arrested the former commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Saiful Islam in a murder case. The case was filed with the port city’s Chandgaon police station over the murder of a student in a clash during the July mass uprising.
Confirming his arrest, CMP Additional Commissioner Humayun Kabir told Liberty News, “Based on a specific allegation, he [Saiful] was arrested by police in Dhaka and a team of CMP went to Dhaka to bring him back.”
Liberty News’ local correspondent reports that Saiful was the 32nd commissioner of CMP. As an officer of Bangladesh Civil Services’ 20th batch, Saiful Islam earlier served as deputy inspector general police at Metro rail (MRT) in Dhaka before being posted as the CMP commissioner.
