Former Law Minister Anisul Haque faced a physical assault by pro-BNP lawyers inside a Narayanganj courtroom after being placed on a four-day police remand in connection with the murder case of madrasa student Sulaiman.

The attack occurred on Monday following the remand order issued by Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Md. Moinuddin Kadir. During the hearing, a group of pro-BNP lawyers punched and hit Anisul Haque inside the courtroom.

Police quickly intervened, escorting the former minister to a prison van amid chaos, while a heavy police presence secured the area. Surrounding the van, the agitated lawyers chanted slogans demanding Haque’s execution. Anisul Haque was later transferred to Narayanganj Jail under tight security.

Earlier in the day, Haque was brought to the court from Keraniganj Central Jail under strict security arrangements. During the remand hearing, a large number of pro-BNP lawyers gathered both inside and outside the courtroom, shouting slogans against him.

Court Police Inspector Md. Kaiyum Khan confirmed that Haque was placed on a four-day remand in the case filed with Siddhirganj Police Station over the killing of 19-year-old Hafez Sulaiman.

According to police, on August 5 last year, during the anti-discrimination student movement, Sulaiman was shot at Shimrail area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway and later died while being transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

On August 22, Sulaiman’s brother-in-law Shamim Kabir filed a case naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the prime accused, along with senior Awami League leaders, including Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Dipu Moni, Anisul Haque, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former MP Shamim Osman, and 45 others.

Plaintiff’s lawyer Advocate Sakhawat Hossain Khan stated that the Awami League leaders and activists disrupted the student protest by creating panic on the highway through road blockades, cocktail explosions, and indiscriminate firing under Anisul Haque’s alleged directives, leading to Sulaiman’s death.
