Former Food Minister Qamrul Islam sustained head injuries after slipping in a custody toilet while awaiting a court hearing in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Qamrul Islam, who has been in jail since November in connection with a corruption case, was kept in the court’s detention cell on Monday (May 26) for a scheduled hearing. During his time in the holding area, he reportedly fell in the toilet and was left bloodied from a head injury.
His lawyer, Advocate Nasim Mahmud, briefed reporters, saying, “He has lost significant weight and suffers from multiple illnesses, including stomach cancer. After falling in the toilet, he suffered a head injury and was bleeding. He was given a head bandage and then taken to the Keraniganj prison hospital.”
The ACC arrested Qamrul Islam on February 11 over allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources. According to the commission, he deposited Tk 16.77 crore across 15 bank accounts, withdrew Tk 13.22 crore, and currently holds a balance of Tk 3.55 crore.
The corruption case was filed on December 23 last year, accusing the former minister of acquiring illicit assets.
