Liberty News Desk

Former lawmaker Md Zafar Alam, who represented Cox’s Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua) constituency, was arrested by detectives from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the capital’s Dhanmondi area today.

The arrest was confirmed through a press release issued by DMP this afternoon. However, the authorities did not immediately disclose further details regarding the reason behind the arrest.

Zafar Alam was elected to parliament for the first time in 2018 as a candidate of the ruling Awami League. During his tenure, he faced numerous allegations, including irregularities, amassing illegal wealth, and abusing local residents. Amid mounting controversies, he failed to secure the party’s nomination for the most recent parliamentary election. Running as an independent candidate, he was subsequently defeated.

Sources at the Detective Branch said Zafar Alam is currently being interrogated, and further information will be provided in due course.
