Nine months after the fall of the Awami League government, former President Abdul Hamid quietly left Bangladesh in the early hours of Wednesday, amid mounting legal pressure, including a murder case filed against him.
Abdul Hamid, who served as president during the Awami League regime, departed for Bangkok on Thai Airways flight TG340 at 3:05 AM, according to sources at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
A senior airport official, requesting anonymity, confirmed the departure and said Hamid arrived at the airport around 11:00 PM. After completing immigration checks, he was cleared to board the flight.
Sources further confirmed that a murder case was filed against the former president on January 14 at Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station. The case also names several high-profile figures from the previous administration, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, and senior party leader Obaidul Quader.
Before this, nearly 50 cases had been filed against Awami League leaders in Kishoreganj alone, although Abdul Hamid was not initially named in any of them.
His sudden departure, which follows months of political turmoil and public uprising that led to the regime’s collapse, has raised serious concerns about possible evasion of justice. Authorities have yet to confirm whether an official warrant or travel restriction was in place at the time of his exit.
More details are expected as the situation develops.
