Former President Abdul Hamid returned to Dhaka early Sunday after a month-long medical stay in Bangkok, arriving amid controversy over his earlier departure while facing legal proceedings.

Hamid landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 1:30 AM on Thai Airways flight TG-339 and was brought down from the aircraft in a wheelchair, confirmed airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad. He passed through immigration at 1:45 AM and left the airport for his residence around 3:00 AM.

The 79-year-old former Awami League lawmaker had flown to Bangkok on May 8 for medical treatment, accompanied by his younger son, Barrister Riyad Ahmed Tushar, and brother-in-law ANM Naushad Khan, principal of President Abdul Hamid Medical College.

His departure sparked public outcry, as Hamid is an accused in a case filed over a July uprising-related attack on a procession. Following his exit, the Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury warned of strict action against those responsible.

In response, police officials Hasan Chowdhury (Kishoreganj special superintendent) and Tahsin Arif (additional SP, Special Branch immigration wing) were withdrawn. Sub-Inspector Azharul Islam of Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station and trainee Sub-Inspector Md Soleiman of the Special Branch were suspended for negligence.

The controversy over Hamid’s ability to leave the country despite facing charges continues to draw scrutiny from political observers and the public.
