Detectives have arrested four suspects in connection with a violent mugging in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area, where a student was attacked with a machete and robbed — an incident that went viral on social media.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed on Thursday that they arrested four individuals over a robbery that took place on May 18 in the Greenway Lane area of Moghbazar. A viral CCTV video showed a student being assaulted with a machete during the early morning hours as three men on a white motorbike attempted to snatch his bag and mobile phone.
The arrested suspects are Md. Shamim (24), Md. Jibon alias Hridoy (27), Sohel Rana (36), and Mokbul Hossain (25). According to the DB, Sohel, Hridoy, and Shamim directly participated in the mugging, while Mokbul was identified as a buyer of the stolen goods.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Tejgaon division of the DB conducted raids across Dhaka and nearby areas and arrested the suspects. Law enforcers also recovered the victim’s stolen bag, Tk 9,600 in cash, a mobile phone, two machetes, a switchblade, and the motorbike used in the robbery.
The brutal robbery drew widespread public outrage after the surveillance footage circulated online. It showed the victim walking through a narrow alley at 5:22 AM when the assailants intercepted him. As he resisted, the attackers slashed him repeatedly before fleeing with his belongings.
The student, identified as Abdullah, later filed a case at Hatirjheel Police Station on May 25.
DB officials confirmed that the detainees are part of a professional mugging syndicate operating in various parts of the capital. All four have multiple prior cases registered against them in different police stations.
Authorities have assured that operations are ongoing to dismantle such criminal networks and enhance safety across Dhaka’s neighborhoods.
