The Dhaka First Division Cricket League began under unprecedented circumstances on Sunday, with three of the five scheduled matches decided by walkovers, leading to the automatic relegation of four clubs.
Partex Sporting Club, Gazi Tyres Cricket Academy, Kalabagan Krira Chakra and Amber Sporting Club were relegated after failing to turn up for their respective fixtures.
“Yes, four clubs have been relegated due to walkovers,” a Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) official confirmed. “If any of them want to participate later, that will be a separate matter. They will need to submit formal letters, but they cannot return through the normal procedure.”
Dhaka United Sporting Club were awarded full points against Gazi Tyres Cricket Academy at BKSP Ground 3, while Baridhara Dazzlers claimed victory after Partex Sporting Club failed to appear. At BKSP Ground 4, the match between Kalabagan Krira Chakra and Amber Sporting Club also ended in a double no-show.
Five matches are scheduled for Monday, and it is expected that at least four more clubs may concede walkovers.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is considering organising a separate tournament for players who have been left without competitive cricket due to their clubs’ decision to stay away from domestic leagues.
Earlier in the day, at least 50 players from eight absentee clubs and others staged a human-chain protest at Gate 2 of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. The protesters cited alleged irregularities in the BCB elections and broader disputes that have sparked an ongoing standoff between the BCB and 44 Dhaka-based rebel clubs from various leagues.
