Four dead as trawler capsizes in Sunamganj

Four people, including women and children, have died in a passenger trawler capsize in Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj.

The incident occurred around 9:30pm on Saturday in the Boulai River near the Ahsanpur area under Beheli union of the upazila, confirmed Jamalganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Saiful Islam.

One critically injured child, Sourav Sarker, 10, has been sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment, he added.

The deceased are Beauty Chakraborty, 45, Kalpana Sarker, 45, Ganga Sarker, 6, and Roudra Sarker, said the OC.

According to witnesses, the trawler carrying 50 passengers was traveling from Madhyanagar upazila to Moglakandi village in Beheli union of Jamalganj upazila on Saturday evening.

Around 9:30pm, the trawler capsized near the Ahsanpur area, they said. While most passengers managed to swim ashore, five people, including three children, went missing, they added.

Later, locals recovered the bodies of two women and two children from the river, as per the eyewitnesses.

Liberty News’ local correspondent reports that the injured child was rescued and taken to Jamalganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors provided initial treatment. However, as his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, they said.

OC Saiful Islam said: “Upon receiving the news, we arrived at the scene. Four people have died in the trawler capsize, and one injured child has been sent to Sylhet for treatment.”
