Khulna witnessed a series of shooting attacks on Sunday (March 30) night, with four separate shooting incidents leaving three people injured. Two incidents took place in the city’s Rupsha Beribandh and Custom Ghat areas under Sadar Police Station, while the other two occurred in Rupsha upazila.
The victims have been identified as Shawon Chowdhury (29) from Rupsha Natun Bazar, Sheikh Farid (32), a trolley driver from Custom Ghat, and Mohammad Rabiul Islam (32) from Ramnagar Ice Factory. All three were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) with gunshot wounds.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station, Hawladar Sonowar Hussain Masum, stated that around 7:45 PM, three armed assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Shawon while he was standing in front of a tea stall near his home. Although the shots were aimed at him, one bullet struck his right arm instead. Local residents rushed him to KMCH. Authorities have launched an operation to apprehend the attackers. Shawon is the son of Md. Shukur Ali from Tarik Goli near Natun Bazar Launch Ghat.
In another incident, Sheikh Farid, son of the late Sheikh Abdul Mannan, was shot in the back while standing near Custom Ghat. The unidentified shooter fled the scene. Locals rescued Farid and took him to KMCH for treatment.
Beyond the city limits, two more attacks were reported in Rupsha upazila. According to OC Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman of Rupsha Police Station, an attempt was made on the life of Rubel, a resident of Bagmara. Armed assailants targeted him near a bank at Bagmara Bus Stand. However, due to the large presence of worshippers during Maghrib prayers, the attackers were unable to execute their plan and fled the scene on a motorcycle. Initial investigations suggest the attack stemmed from a dispute over drug trade in the area.
Liberty News’ local correspondent reports – that night, in Ramnagar, alleged drug dealer Mohammad Rabiul Islam was shot in the neck in another attack. Locals rescued him and admitted him to KMCH in critical condition. Police have initiated legal proceedings regarding these incidents. Authorities are currently investigating all four attacks, and efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators.
