Bangladesh Fresh Fruits Importers Association has threatened to stop importing fresh fruits if the government doesn’t withdraw the increased supplementary tariff of 30% by Monday.
On January 9, the government increased the supplementary tariff on imported fresh fruits from 20% to 30%, causing frustration among importers. The association’s vice-president, Faruk Siddique, expressed concerns at a press conference on Wednesday at the Dhaka Reporters Unity, stating that the hike was negatively impacting their businesses.
According to Siddique, the sales of fresh fruits have slowed significantly, with trucks now taking 3-4 days to sell their stock, compared to just one day before the tariff increase. This delay has resulted in additional charges for shipping and port demurrage.
Liberty News’ international correspondent reports the association warned that if the tariff is not revoked, they will suspend the clearance of imported fresh fruits at all land and seaports from Tuesday onwards. It was also highlighted that local production covers only 35-40% of the demand, and the remaining 60-65% must be imported, making the tariff hike a major blow to the industry.
