The Group of Seven (G7) nations voiced strong support for Israel on Monday, blaming Iran for fuelling instability in the Middle East and calling for broader de-escalation across the region.

In a joint statement, the G7 leaders affirmed Israel’s right to self-defence and labelled Iran the “principal source of regional instability and terror.” The group also reiterated its stance that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.

The statement comes amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, which began on Friday with Israeli airstrikes inside Iranian territory. Both nations have since engaged in retaliatory attacks, with Iran reporting over 220 deaths—mostly civilians—while Israel confirmed 24 civilian casualties.

The G7 leaders urged that any resolution to the Iran-Israel crisis must lead to a wider de-escalation, including a ceasefire in Gaza. They also pledged coordination to safeguard stability in global energy markets.

Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), while Israel widely believed to possess nuclear weapons—remains outside the treaty framework.

US President Donald Trump, who left the G7 summit in Canada early due to the Middle East situation, said Washington had advance knowledge of the Israeli strikes but reiterated that the US was not directly involved.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with British, French, and EU counterparts on the unfolding crisis, as tensions in the region continued to rise.
