Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) sector is expected to see relief from the ongoing gas crisis starting Saturday, as the government ramps up LNG supply to industrial zones, Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan announced.
During an inspection of industrial areas including Ashulia and Gazipur, Khan told reporters that the gas supply situation is already improving and will continue to stabilize in the coming days.
“The situation could have normalized earlier, but rough seas delayed the unloading of imported LNG. As of today, 50 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) has been added to the grid, and another 100 to 150 MMSCFD will follow shortly,” he stated.
To tackle the shortage, the government has arranged four additional LNG cargoes, the adviser confirmed.
While visiting Towel Tex Limited in Kaliakair, Gazipur, Khan met with factory owners and acknowledged their concerns. “There’s merit to the complaints about gas supply inconsistency. We’re working to fix this through necessary adjustments,” he said.
Khan attributed the delay in gas stabilization to unfavorable weather conditions at sea. “We expect significant improvement by this evening and will continue to monitor progress closely,” he assured.
He also warned against illegal gas connections, promising strict action. “All unauthorized lines will be disconnected and violators penalized,” he said firmly.
Earlier in the day, the adviser visited the Dhaka Palli Bidyut Samity-1 office amid ongoing employee protests. Addressing the unrest, he said, “A meeting is set for tomorrow to discuss the relationship between Palli Bidyut and the Rural Electrification Board (REB). A committee led by the BRAC University Vice-Chancellor will submit a report soon, and necessary action will be taken accordingly.”
Khan urged all stakeholders to refrain from protest activities that disrupt public services, citing that recent sabotage had led to temporary blackouts in over two dozen areas.
He was accompanied by Energy Secretary Saiful Islam, Titas Gas Managing Director Parvez Ahmed, and Palli Bidyut Samity Chairman Major General Azim.
