- The Lancet estimated a death toll in Gaza between 55,298–78,525 people, compared to 46,000+ reported by the health ministry
- There are hundreds of documented war crimes including usage of illegal weapons in Gaza by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)
- Ceasefire to take place from 19/01/2025
Mediators said Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had reached a ceasefire agreement, halting the catastrophic 15-month conflict in the Gaza Strip and increasing the likelihood of ending the bloodiest and most damaging battle between the fierce rivals.
Following weeks of arduous negotiations in the capital of Qatar, the agreement calls for the gradual release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel, the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced Gaza residents to what is left of their homes, and the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas. Additionally, it would flood the devastated region with desperately needed humanitarian aid.
A limited prisoner swap, a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and an influx of aid into the enclave are all part of the first phase, which is expected to last six weeks.
33 Israeli prisoners who were seized during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led offensive on southern Israel—including women, children, and people over 50—will be freed. Israel will release more Palestinian detainees, including those with life sentences, in return during this phase. Approximately 1,000 Palestinians who were imprisoned after October 7 are among those being released.
In the besieged north of the enclave, where humanitarian organizations warn starvation may have spread, Israel will permit inhabitants to return to their homes and permit an influx of aid into the enclave, up to 600 trucks per day.
Given that Israel and Hamas seem to be reaching an agreement to end the 15-month conflict, the Palestinian prime minister says it is unthinkable for any organization other than the Palestinian Authority to govern the Gaza Strip going forward.
