Georgetown University in the US has honoured women democratic leaders and activists from across the world, including student leaders of last year’s anti-fascist uprising in Bangladesh, at an annual award giving ceremony.

Hilary Rodham Clinton, 67th US secretary of state, handed over the “Hillary Rodham Clinton Awards” on the premises of the university’s Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) on Tuesday.

“This annual event honours exceptional women leaders who are advancing women’s rights and working to create a more peaceful and secure world,” the university said in a statement.

This year’s ceremony recognized Nobel Prize winner Maria Ressa, Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Applebaum, the women student protest leaders of Bangladesh and several Venezuelan women political prisoners for their work in safeguarding democracy.

After delivering the awards, Hillary said, “The women we honor today have used their voices and their pens to resist authoritarianism under the most stringent of threats. They’ve shown why autocrats often target women, because women standing up and speaking out become a very powerful force.”
