eSIM technology is rapidly transforming mobile connectivity, with projections indicating 4.5 billion global users by 2030, driven by 5G expansion, smart device adoption, and shifting regulatory landscapes.
According to a recent study by Kaleido Intelligence, eSIM (embedded SIM) usage is set to skyrocket, with nearly 75% of smartphones expected to support the technology within the next five years. In contrast to just 500 million devices equipped with eSIMs in 2023, the number is forecast to climb to 4.5 billion by the end of the decade.
eSIMs, which are digitally integrated into devices, offer users seamless switching between operators without the need for physical SIM cards. The technology supports smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, making it both user-friendly and environmentally sustainable.
Experts cite the rapid rollout of 5G networks as a primary factor behind eSIM’s accelerated adoption. “eSIM is more than a convenience—it’s a leap toward future-ready, eco-conscious communication,” said a Kaleido analyst.
The report highlights that eSIM’s growth is not limited to consumer electronics. Enhanced versions are being developed for IoT ecosystems, marking a significant step in digital infrastructure.
In a major policy shift, China has relaxed its restrictions on eSIM technology. As a result, eSIM-enabled smartphones are expected to enter the Chinese market by the third quarter of this year. Analysts believe this move will further boost global adoption, given China’s influence on the tech market.
With rising demand for smart devices and growing concerns over environmental impact, eSIM is positioned to lead the next phase of mobile evolution—providing faster, more flexible, and sustainable connectivity worldwide.
