Gono Odhikar Parishad has strongly condemned and protested the brutal attack on the organization’s Tungipara Municipal Convener, Md. Sakib. The attack was described as a clear sign of fascism.
On Tuesday, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur and General Secretary Md. Rashed Khan expressed severe condemnation of the attack on Sakib. According to a statement released by the party’s office secretary, Shakil Uzzaman, the attack occurred on Monday when 30-40 individuals led by SM Zilani’s brother Sagar and the Municipal Youth League President Taijul, brutally assaulted Sakib. The attackers left him near a dustbin, presumed dead.
The party leaders linked the attack to the increasing signs of fascism under the Awami League and accused its affiliates, including the Volunteer League and Youth League, of using similar violent tactics. They emphasized that such incidents mirror the ongoing repression of opposition leaders and workers by the ruling party, which has been in power for 16 years.
Gono Odhikar Parishad’s leaders also referred to similar attacks in several districts, including Patuakhali, Bakerganj, Habiganj, and Brahmanbaria, where their activists were targeted by BNP supporters. The party leaders have called for the immediate arrest of the attackers and their prosecution under national laws.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that the statement further emphasized that the Gono Odhikar Parishad, born out of resistance against fascism, would continue to fight against such oppression. The party made it clear that if necessary, they would initiate a fresh struggle against the new wave of authoritarianism.
