Google has launched a new AI-based feature in its Messages app to protect Android users from fraudulent messages. This feature, called “Scam Detection,” automatically identifies suspicious messages and alerts users instantly, helping them avoid falling victim to scams.

According to Google, scammers often begin by sending harmless-looking messages to build trust before gradually luring victims into fraudulent traps. To counter this, the Scam Detection feature scans every incoming message, automatically flags any that seem suspicious, and alerts users immediately. Users can then choose to ignore the message or report and block the sender.

Alberto Pastor Nieto, Senior Product Manager of Google Messages, explained that while traditional spam protection works before a message is sent, new scams often occur within ongoing conversations, using social engineering tactics to trick users. In response, Google has developed an advanced AI model capable of analyzing conversation patterns and detecting suspicious messages. Importantly, this technology ensures that user privacy remains intact throughout the process.

Liberty News’ tech correspondent states that the Scam Detection feature primarily flags suspicious messages coming from numbers not in the user’s contact list. While this feature is enabled by default, users can turn it off through the spam protection settings. Currently, this feature is available for English-speaking users in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
