Gopalganj District Awami League General Secretary GM Shahabuddin Azam was arrested by immigration police at Benapole check-post in Jashore while attempting to travel to India on Tuesday (June 10) around 11:00 AM.
The arrested Shahabuddin Azam, a resident of Binapani Girls’ School Road in Gopalganj Sadar, was accompanied by his wife at that time. However, his wife was not detained, as there are no charges against her.
According to immigration sources, Shahabuddin Azam submitted his passport at the immigration desk on Tuesday morning while traveling to India. The immigration police detained him for questioning because his passport was on the stop list. Upon further questioning, it was confirmed that there are several pending cases against him with the Gopalganj police, including one related to an attack on army personnel, vandalism, and arson. As a result, he was officially arrested by Benapole Immigration Police and handed over to Benapole Port Police Station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Benapole Immigration, Ilyas Hossain Munshi, said that immigration officials had been alerted in advance that Azam might attempt to leave the country. All officers at the exit point were instructed to remain vigilant. When Azam presented his passport at the desk for an exit stamp, his name matched the stop list in the system. Upon verification and questioning, he was arrested.
OC Md. Rasel Mia of Benapole Port Police Station confirmed the transfer, stating that since there are existing cases against Azam with Gopalganj Police, he will be handed over to them for further legal proceedings.
