Section 144 was imposed in Gopalganj on Wednesday after several rounds of mishap centring the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) rally and march. Amid the curfew, joint forces have arrested 14 people.

Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Kamruzzaman imposed section 144 in Gopalganj indefinitely on Wednesday afternoon. As a result, streets were empty, businesses were closed off, and traffic was sparse on Thursday morning.

NCP was scheduled to have a rally at the Pouro Park area of Gopalganj. A police vehicle was vandalised and torched ahead of the programme at the Ulpur area. Later, a vehicle of the Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was attacked and vandalised in the upazila’s Kongshur area on the Tekerhat road. The driver, Moin, was injured in this incident.

Shortly before the rally, miscreants attacked and vandalised the stage at Pouro Park. At that time, central leaders of the NCP were in the city but were not present at the venue.

The rally started shortly after 2pm. Central leaders of the party delivered speeches. A motorcade of the leaders was attacked after the rally at around 2:30pm. Meyhem erupted in Gopalganj afterwards, prompting the DC to impose Section 144. Four platoons of BGB were also deployed there. Later, a curfew was imposed from Wednesday 8pm to Thursday 6pm.

Four people died in the clashes. The deceased are Deepto Saha, 25, son of Santosh Saha, a resident of Udayan Road in Gopalganj city; Ramzan Kazi, 18, of Kotalipara; Sohel Rana, 30, of Tungipara; and Emon, 24, of Gopalganj Sadar.

In addition, 15 injured people are undergoing treatment at the hospital. Of them, three seriously injured people have been sent to Dhaka.
