In early June 2024, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting invited applications for the National Film Awards recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema released in 2023. However, political unrest during mid-2024, including a mass uprising that led to a change in government, disrupted the process.
Following the transition, a new jury board was formed to evaluate the 2023 films, and the announcement of winners was anticipated soon. Several media outlets even hinted at possible awardees, fueling discussions within the film community.
Recently, sources within the ministry revealed that the government is now reviewing the possibility of announcing the National Film Awards for both 2023 and 2024 together. With 2025 already underway and a relatively low number of film releases in 2024, officials believe a joint announcement could ease administrative pressure and minimize costs.
It remains unclear whether a separate circular will be issued for the 2024 films or if a distinct jury board will be formed. No official timeline for the announcement has been disclosed yet.
The National Film Awards, initiated in 1975, remain Bangladesh’s sole state-sponsored and highest cinematic honor. Each winner receives a 17-carat gold medal weighing 15 grams, a replica, a certificate of honor, and cash prize. Notably, in 2008, awards for four years — 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 — were announced together, setting a precedent for the current consideration.
