The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections in October are drawing attention as two cricketing legends, Aminul Islam Bulbul and Tamim Iqbal, contest for the top position. Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has clarified that neither the government nor his office has any candidate in the fray, calling it a positive sign for the nation’s cricket administration.
Speaking at a meeting with senior sports journalists on Monday, Asif Mahmud said, “We have no candidate in the BCB election. Bulbul and Tamim are both cricket legends, and their competence and skill are proven. For the first time, two qualified cricket personalities outside politics are contesting for the most powerful position of the BCB. This is good news for the sporting community. When capable candidates participate in elections, it brings fresh energy and transparency to cricket administration in the country.”
The Adviser also commented on the removal of former BCB president Faruque Ahmed and his recent meeting with him.
“I have no regrets regarding the decision taken about Faruque Bhai. At that time, he was unable to manage the situation. However, I have no doubt about his competence or capability. I am always open to discussions with any qualified person from the sporting community. I want to listen to everyone’s views and learn from such interactions,” he said.
Regarding the upcoming BCB election, Asif Mahmud emphasized his desire for a smooth and fair process.
“I want the BCB election to conclude properly and lawfully. The election commission has been formed to oversee the process. They will gather information about councilors and prepare a code of conduct for candidates. I will not interfere in the election unnecessarily, but full cooperation will be extended to ensure a fair and transparent voting process,” he added.
He also touched on governance reforms over the past year, “Some inconsistencies remain in BCB’s constitution. Due to time constraints and occasional non-cooperation, some amendments could not be implemented. Hopefully, the elected committee will carry out the necessary reforms.”
