According to Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, the interim government’s primary objective is to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh for trial.

Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated that one of the main objectives of the interim government is to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh for trial. His remarks came during a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday, where Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Mazumdar was also present.

Alam emphasized, “Our main goal is to bring her back to Bangladesh and ensure justice. Recent reports from the United Nations Human Rights Commission clearly highlight the crimes she is accused of, including allegations of crimes against humanity.” He further cited a survey by India Today, revealing that 55% of respondents favored her return to Bangladesh for trial, while only 16-17% wanted her to remain in India.

The government also announced plans to form a high-level committee to investigate alleged corruption in the ICT and digitalization sectors during the previous Awami League administration. The committee is expected to release a white paper within two months.

Regarding the Awami League’s participation in upcoming elections, Alam said, “The people of Bangladesh will decide on this matter. However, those involved in the July genocide, enforced disappearances, and corruption will face justice before any political decisions are made.”

Additionally, Alam addressed the World Government Summit 2025 held in Dubai, where discussions took place about lifting the ban on Bangladeshi workers in the UAE. He expressed optimism about resolving the issue soon.

Alam also responded to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) regarding threats to journalists in Bangladesh. He stated, “We welcome any report on journalism, but isolated incidents are often exaggerated. We invite CPJ to visit Bangladesh and observe the state of media freedom firsthand. We believe that Bangladesh is currently experiencing the highest level of press freedom in its 53-year history.”

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that the press conference concluded with a commitment to ensuring justice and transparency in all sectors while maintaining media freedom and safeguarding journalists’ rights.
