The government has amended the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, 1973, enabling punitive actions against political parties, their affiliated bodies, and supporters if found involved in international crimes.
In a major legal shift, the government has empowered the International Crimes Tribunal to take punitive measures against political entities by amending the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, 1973. The revised law allows the suspension or ban of political parties and their affiliates, cancellation of registration or licenses, and confiscation of assets if they are found complicit in crimes under the tribunal’s jurisdiction.
The amendment, formally titled the International Crimes (Tribunal) (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, was approved by the President and published in the official gazette late Saturday. The development became public on Sunday, sparking intense political discussions nationwide.
According to the gazette, the amendment was made under the authority granted by Article 93(1) of the Constitution. It expands the tribunal’s jurisdiction to hold not only individuals but also organizations accountable for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.
The move follows a high-level meeting of the interim government’s advisory council held at the state guesthouse Jamuna on Saturday night. Law adviser Asif Nazrul stated that the amendment was brought in light of allegations of genocide during the July Movement, implicating the Awami League. “Pending trial, all operations of the party, especially online activities, have been restricted under anti-terrorism laws,” he said.
The revised law further stipulates that any individual or group associated with a political organization who aids, abets, instigates, conspires, or participates in international crimes will face severe legal consequences.
Legal analysts say the amendment marks a significant step in extending justice mechanisms beyond individuals to institutions, a move likely to reshape the political landscape in the coming days.
