Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has criticised the joint press briefing held between the interim government and the BNP, calling it an unprecedented move that embarrassed most political parties in the country.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday after attending an event organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Dhaka, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said, “We welcome the Yunus-Tarique meeting, but the joint press conference is the matter of our objection, which left most of the political parties in embarrassment.”

He stated that Jamaat deliberately skipped Tuesday’s National Consensus Commission meeting as a form of protest against the joint announcement.

Referring to the 13 June meeting in London between Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Taher said the public announcement of an agreement to hold the national election in February 2025, ahead of Ramadan, should have been handled more impartially.

Taher warned that both the interim government and the Consensus Commission risk losing credibility if they appear biased. He added that the Jamaat ameer was contacted directly by Prof Yunus regarding the party’s absence and had expressed willingness to engage in future talks.

Reaffirming Jamaat’s support for a free and fair election, Taher said the party seeks the government’s success in delivering credible polls and called for a National Citizen Charter (NCC) to ensure checks and balances within state institutions.
