The government has so far confiscated assets worth Tk 1,30,759 crore, including foreign currency and immovable properties, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqur Alam.
In a press briefing held on Monday at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in Dhaka, Press Secretary Shafiqur Alam revealed that the government has confiscated assets amounting to Tk 1,30,758.7 crore. Of this, foreign currency accounts for $164 million, while moveable assets total Tk 42,614.27 crore. An additional $20.7 million was recovered domestically.
Alam clarified that the seized funds would not be used to support the national budget. “Instead, the money recovered from looters will be directed towards initiatives that benefit the poor,” he stated. He further mentioned that the Chief Adviser has instructed the creation of a dedicated fund to manage the confiscated assets, ensuring they are used for public welfare.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur, also present at the briefing, stated that substantial amounts of money were laundered abroad through both bank fraud and corruption. “Some of these assets have now been recovered within the country,” he said.
He added that a management board would be formed to oversee the use of these assets. Proceeds from bank-related seizures will be returned to the respective financial institutions, while those gained through corruption will be allocated to public welfare programs. “All procedures will follow legal protocols, and if necessary, relevant laws will be amended,” the Governor noted.
Also present at the briefing was AFM Shahinul Islam, head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
