The interim government is seriously reviewing the public demand to ban the Awami League over alleged authoritarianism and terrorism, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing issued Friday afternoon.
In a press release issued shortly before 3 PM on Friday, the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser’s Office said that growing calls from political parties, organizations, and citizens to ban the Awami League are being taken into serious consideration. These demands cite allegations of authoritarian rule and terrorist activities.
The statement noted that the government has already initiated communication with various political parties and is committed to reaching a prompt decision through discussions. It added that a UN report highlighting alleged acts of terrorism by Awami League leaders and supporters is also being reviewed as part of the process. Meanwhile, the public has been urged to remain patient.
Acknowledging popular sentiment, the government has already declared the student wing Chhatra League a terrorist organization under existing law, the statement added.
Furthermore, the press release announced that the administration is preparing necessary amendments to the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act to take action against organizations involved in crimes against humanity.
The statement also mentioned public anger regarding the foreign travel of former president and murder accused Abdul Hamid, assuring that the government is aware of the issue and is determined to take legal action against all those involved.
