A government delegation is set to visit the United States (US) next week to attend the third round of negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing tariff dispute, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin said on Monday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat, the adviser said talks with the US side have so far been “optimistic” and that efforts are underway to reduce the 35% “reciprocal tariff” recently imposed by US President Donald Trump.
The discussion comes amid Trump’s allegation that Bangladesh is taking unfair advantage of access to the American market while imposing high tariffs on US goods.
Following the meeting with business leaders, Hatem Ali, president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Producers and Exporters Association, expressed confidence in the government’s efforts, saying the business community remains hopeful about a positive outcome.
Adviser Bashir Uddin reaffirmed that Bangladesh is committed to narrowing the trade imbalance and protecting the interests of both economies through dialogue.
