Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana said on Thursday that the government will roll out extensive nationwide public awareness campaigns to ensure broad-based participation in the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the upcoming referendum.
She made the remarks while joining virtually as the chief guest at a review meeting on the progress of publicity activities conducted by District Information Offices in connection with the election and the referendum, said a press release.
The meeting was chaired by Director General of the Department of Mass Communication Md Abdul Jalil and attended by heads of 68 field-level information offices.
The information secretary directed the concerned authorities to begin intensive awareness activities across the country starting Friday.
She emphasized organising courtyard meetings on a ward-by-ward basis to motivate voters, particularly young and first-time voters.
Under the “Votalap” programme, she instructed District Information Offices to conduct door-to-door outreach to encourage citizens to take part in the referendum.
Mahbuba stressed that inclusive voter participation is crucial to making the referendum meaningful and distinctive.
She said energising voters is a key responsibility of the information offices and underscored the need to educate citizens about the importance and benefits of voting.
Participation in the referendum, she added, is vital for ensuring justice and the rule of law.
Highlighting the need for effective communication, the information secretary called for region-specific campaign content rooted in local language and culture so that people can better understand the significance of the referendum.
She also emphasised increasing public awareness about the referendum and the electoral code of conduct through the “Ten-Minute Brief” programme.
Under this initiative, officials of District Information Offices will stand in small rural markets to deliver brief ten-minute talks on electoral dos and don’ts, alongside distributing leaflets and other publicity materials.
Speaking as chair of the meeting, Director General Md Abdul Jalil said field-level staff are working tirelessly to provide practical demonstrations on the electoral code of conduct and the referendum, encourage young voters, and enhance women’s participation.
He informed that ten songs on the referendum have already been composed and are currently undergoing tuning and recording, and will soon be performed at the field level to boost public engagement.
He also said that content received from the Election Commission, the Office of the Chief Adviser, and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs is being widely disseminated at the grassroots level.
Among others, Director (technical) of the Department of Mass Communication Mir Mohammad Aslam Uddin, Director of Barishal District Information Office Omar Faruk Dewan, Director of Rangpur District Information Office Mofakkharul Iqbal, Director (administration) Syed A Mu’men, and Director (publicity and coordination) Dalia Yasmin spoke at the meeting.
