The government is working to turn Faridpur and Cumilla into two new administrative divisions based on the demand of the people in these two large areas.
At the same time, the government has decided to form two new upazilas by splitting Muradnagar in Cumilla and Fatikchhari in Chattogram.
A final decision on the issue will be made during a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation/Reform (NICAR) to be held next month, according to sources.
The NICAR meeting is likely to be held in the first week of October, added a source.
A decision in this regard was made during a meeting chaired by Cabinet Secretary Abdur Rashid on 8 September.
The Public Administration Reform Commission has already proposed the formation of Faridpur division with Faridpur, Madaripur, Rajbari, Gopalganj and Shariatpur districts and the inclusion of Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Chandpur, Feni, Lakshmipur and Noakhali in Cumilla division.
Bangladesh currently has eight divisions – Dhaka, Chattogram, Barishal, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet.
Earlier, the government had postponed the decision regarding the creation of new divisions and upazilas as part of its austerity measures, but the demand has become inevitable due to pressure from local people and leaders of various political parties.
Seeking anonymity, a former secretary told the reporter that some administrative posts will be created through the initiatives, while the local politicians will design new projects in the name of development works following the decision.
