The United States has officially decided to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. In response to this, tech giant Google has updated the name of the gulf on its service, Google Maps, to “Gulf of America.”

On Monday, Google made the change on its “Maps” platform for USA users, replacing “Gulf of Mexico” with “Gulf of America.” This change follows an executive order by USA President Donald Trump.

In a blog post, Google mentioned that users outside the United States would still see both the old and new names, similar to other disputed geographic locations. The company clarified that USA users would see “Gulf of America,” while Mexican users would continue to see “Gulf of Mexico.”

Google explained that this change aligns with its policy, as it adheres to the USA government’s recognized geographic naming standards, set by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

The Federal Board on Geographic Names has officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” in accordance with President Trump’s executive order. However, this change will not affect other countries. The Mexican president has announced that he will ignore this change and has urged others to do the same.

According to Liberty News’ international correspondent, during the Super Bowl on Sunday, Trump flew over the gulf aboard Air Force One and declared the day as the “First Gulf of America Day.” His companion, Secretary of Homeland Security Doug Burgam, shared a picture on social media from the USA Geological Survey (USGS), which displayed the new name of the Gulf of Mexico.
