Nineteen Israeli soldiers were reportedly killed in southern Gaza following two separate attacks by Hamas’ armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, targeting Israeli military units near Rafah.
In a statement released Thursday, Hamas claimed its fighters struck a seven-member Israeli unit near the Omar Ibn Abdul Aziz Mosque in the Al-Tannur neighborhood of eastern Rafah using powerful explosives, killing all members.
In a separate incident, Al-Qassam Brigades reported launching anti-personnel and anti-armor shells at a 12-member Israeli engineering unit inside a house near the Al-Fidai Junction in the same area. The fighters said the unit was preparing for a demolition operation when they were attacked. The explosion caused multiple casualties, and Hamas claimed to have observed Israeli helicopters landing to evacuate the dead and injured.
The group also reported “intense fighting” with Israeli forces in the nearby Al-Zanina area, though the Israeli military has not confirmed these specific incidents.
According to official Israeli military figures, a total of 854 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 5,847 wounded since the war began on October 7, 2023.
