A celebratory night at Turf Moor took a troubling turn as Sheffield United’s British-Bangladeshi midfielder Hamza Chowdhury became the target of apparent racial abuse following Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League.
Burnley confirmed their return to the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Sunday night (April 20), sparking jubilant scenes as fans flooded the pitch in celebration. However, the festive atmosphere was marred by a disturbing incident involving Hamza Chowdhury.
The Leicester City loanee was reportedly shoved by a police officer while exiting the pitch. Shortly after, a Burnley supporter confronted him with provocative gestures, prompting an angry reaction from Chowdhury. Security personnel quickly intervened, forcibly escorting the midfielder down the tunnel as he resisted repeatedly.
Broadcast footage aired by Sky Sports shows the midfielder visibly agitated, raising concerns that he may have been subjected to racial abuse. Though the exact cause remains unclear, crowd behavior during the celebrations appears to have triggered the incident.
This is not the first time Sheffield United has faced post-match unrest. After a recent loss to Plymouth Argyle, manager Chris Wilder was involved in a sideline scuffle with players and staff.
Despite their on-field success, Burnley and Leeds United’s promotion celebrations have been somewhat overshadowed by such off-pitch chaos, leaving fans and officials questioning the growing tension in English football.
