Hasnat Abdullah, the convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, “As the first step in banning the Awami League, we have proposed today to cancel its registration. Through this, we aim to make the party politically dysfunctional… This will be an institutional decision, as decided by the student and citizen vote on August 5.”
He made these remarks to the media after a meeting with the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy on Saturday.
Hasnat Abdullah further stated, “From the perspective of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, I have said that the boat has sunk. It will never return to Bangladesh. The Awami League’s chapter has ended. On August 5, the student-citizen decision made it clear that the Awami League is irrelevant in the changed Bangladesh.”
He said, “Today, in the meeting with the Chief Advisor, all the anti-fascist political parties were present. Based on everyone’s opinions, we all reached a consensus that the Awami League is irrelevant in the changed Bangladesh. You have seen how different parties fade away and become irrelevant over time, the Awami League has also become irrelevant.”
Hasnat Abdullah further stated, “We have now called on the government to take the initiative to legally ban the Awami League and ensure that the party cannot function in any future political process, we have proposed this.”
