Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh’s Secretary-General, Allama Shaykh Sajidur Rahman, has urged the government to close hotels & restaurants during the day and regulate the prices of essential goods during Ramadan to maintain the sanctity of the holy month.
In a statement released on Saturday, March 1, Rahman emphasized the need for stricter measures to ensure the price control of daily essentials during Ramadan. He also expressed deep solidarity with the oppressed Muslim populations in Gaza, Sudan, and the Sahel region, urging the world to unite for peace and justice in this sacred month.
Rahman called for a halt to all un-Islamic activities during Ramadan, including practices that oppose the Quran such as usury, bribery, and illicit relations. He stressed that the government must take effective actions to prevent such activities and impose strict measures to curb indecency, obscenity, and pornography.
Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of regulating prices and enforcing market monitoring, particularly to keep essential commodities affordable for the public. Rahman urged that actions be taken to curb the practices of syndicates and profiteers while advocating for the increased distribution of goods through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), particularly to support low-income groups until Eid.
Rahman reminded that Ramadan is a month of spiritual purification and piety, but lamented the unreasonable rise in commodity prices during this time in Bangladesh, which worsens the hardship for the poor. He noted that in many countries, prices of essential goods are reduced during Ramadan to ease the burden on people, and urged the interim government to ensure the same in Bangladesh.
