Four months after being killed in an Israeli airstrike, former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah will be buried in Beirut on February 23, with a large public funeral planned for the occasion.

Hassan Nasrallah, who served as the head of Hezbollah for 32 years, will be buried in Beirut on February 23, following his death in an Israeli airstrike on September 27, 2023. His passing has been mourned by Hezbollah, which has confirmed that a large public funeral will take place in his honor.

Hezbollah’s current leader, Naeem Qassem, shared the news in a televised address, explaining that Nasrallah had been temporarily buried in a secret location due to the complex situation at the time of his death. The official burial will occur in the southern suburbs of Beirut, near the new airport road, in accordance with religious traditions.

Additionally, top Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine will be buried in his hometown of Deir Kanun in southern Lebanon. Qassem also reflected on the grave circumstances surrounding Nasrallah’s assassination, which occurred during a period of intense conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

Liberty News’ international correspondent states that, the funeral plans come after the appointment of Naeem Qassem as Hezbollah’s secretary-general on October 29, 2023, and the subsequent ceasefire agreement with Israel brokered by the U.S. and France in late November. The truce, initially set for 60 days, was recently extended to February 18, 2024.
