The High Court has instructed the Election Commission (EC) to grant official registration to the Bangladesh Labour Party and allocate it an electoral symbol within 30 working days of the verdict’s publication.
A High Court Division Bench, comprising Justice Shashanka Shekhar Sarkar and Justice AKM Rabiul Hasan, delivered the verdict on Thursday by making absolute a previously issued rule regarding the party’s registration.
Senior lawyers Nitai Roy Chowdhury and AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon represented the petitioner during the hearing.
Following the ruling, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon briefed reporters, stating that the Bangladesh Labour Party had applied for registration with the Election Commission on October 10, 2022. However, on July 24, 2023, the EC rejected the application.
Challenging the legality of that decision, the party’s President Mostafizur Rahman Iran filed a writ petition with the High Court on September 12, 2023. After a primary hearing, the High Court issued a rule on November 5, 2023, asking why the EC’s rejection should not be declared unlawful.
Concluding the legal proceedings, the court on Thursday ruled in favor of the Labour Party, ordering the Election Commission to comply with the directives and complete the registration process within 30 working days from the date of the judgment’s publication.
Legal analysts view the decision as a significant development in ensuring political inclusivity and accountability within the electoral process.
