Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has convened an emergency meeting to assess and address the recent US decision to impose a 37% tariff on Bangladeshi imports. The move, initiated by President Donald Trump, has sparked concerns over potential risks to Bangladesh’s export sector.
The high-level meeting began at 7:00 PM on Saturday at the state guest house, Jamuna, with the participation of top experts, advisors, and senior government officials.
This development comes amid growing anxiety within the business community over the impact of the tariff hike on key export goods, including garments and leather products—two of Bangladesh’s major foreign currency earners.
Speaking earlier from Bangkok, where he was attending the BIMSTEC summit, Dr. Yunus had expressed cautious optimism about resolving the issue through diplomatic dialogue.
“We are reviewing the matter carefully,” said Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, quoting Professor Yunus on Thursday. “Since the matter is open to negotiation, we will engage in talks and I am confident that we can reach the best possible resolution.”
The government is expected to announce further steps following the conclusion of the emergency meeting.
