In a shocking incident in Shenzhen, China, highway workers cooked and ate a pet dog after it was hit by a car while wandering alone, unaware that the dog belonged to a local resident on vacation.

The dog, which belonged to a man who had gone on vacation to the Maldives, escaped from a shelter on January 29 due to the loud fireworks during the Chinese New Year. The pet’s owner, distressed by the disappearance, offered a 50,000 yuan reward for its return.

However, the dog’s fate took a tragic turn when it was found wandering alone on a highway. After being struck by a vehicle, the injured dog was taken by two highway patrol officers in their car. CCTV footage revealed that the officers transported the dog to their company’s kitchen, where they cooked it and served it to eight people.

The dog’s owner later posted on social media, expressing his sorrow, stating, “My dear dog, I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you. I will always remember you.”

The highway company and traffic police have confirmed the incident. The company spokesperson explained that the workers had mistaken the dog for a stray and believed it had died from the car accident. They followed protocol by publishing a photo of the dog’s body in the company’s system.

Liberty News’ internaional correspondent states that an investigation is underway into the workers involved, and the dog’s owner has announced his intent to file a lawsuit.
