The government has announced a 58-day ban on hilsa fishing, effective from April 15 to June 11, to protect mother eel during the breeding season.

The fishing ban will cover all rivers and seas, aiming to conserve hilsa stocks during their breeding period. The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock’s advisor, Farida Akhter, revealed the details at a press conference on Monday at the Secretariat, which also discussed preparations for the upcoming Ramadan and the ministry’s progress.

During this period, the transportation, storage, distribution, and sale of eel will also be prohibited.

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that to ensure a stable supply and affordable prices of essential food items like fish, meat, milk, and eggs during Ramadan, the government has planned a special initiative. From the 1st to the 28th of Ramadan, broiler chicken, eggs, pasteurized milk, and beef will be sold at controlled prices in Dhaka. The prices will be as follows: dressed broiler chicken at 250 taka per kg, pasteurized milk at 80 taka per liter, eggs at 114 taka per dozen, and beef at 650 taka per kg. These items will be available for sale at 25 locations around Dhaka.
