Syed Sayedul Haque Suman, popularly known as Barrister Suman and former MP for Habiganj-4, has been shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed with Mugda Police Station in connection with last year’s July uprising.
On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq approved a police petition to show Suman arrested in the case. The information was confirmed by Suman’s legal counsel, Advocate Liton.
While being produced before the court amid tight police security at 10:10am, Barrister Suman told the media, “They are setting the country on fire. Save this nation. You are betraying the next generation. History will not forgive you.”
Following the brief statement, a hearing was held regarding the petition to show him arrested. At the end of the session, the court granted the plea and Suman was returned to the court’s holding cell.
According to case details, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 18 July last year, Abdul Aset Shamim, a lawyer at Dhaka Judge Court, was returning home after work when he was struck by rubber bullets allegedly fired by the accused in the Babu Doctor’s Lane area under Mugda Police Station. The bullets hit him on the hand, forehead, chest, jaw, and abdomen.
After receiving medical treatment, the victim recovered. On 1 September, he filed a case with Mugda Police Station naming 51 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sayedul Haque Suman was listed as the 25th accused in the First Information Report (FIR).
Earlier, on the night of 21 October at around 1:30am, Suman was arrested from the Mirpur area of Dhaka. The following day, a Dhaka court granted a five-day remand against him in connection with a separate attempted murder case involving a youth leader and assistant cook of Bangaliyana Bhoj, Hriday Mia.
