A Magura tribunal has handed down the death penalty to Hitu Sheikh for the rape and murder of a child named Aasiya, while acquitting three other accused due to lack of evidence.
In a verdict that stirred strong public emotion, the Magura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered its judgment on Saturday morning in the widely followed Aasiya rape and murder case.
Judge M Jahid Hasan sentenced prime accused Hitu Sheikh to death after finding him guilty of the brutal assault and killing of the minor girl. The court, however, acquitted three other co-accused, citing insufficient evidence against them.
The incident, which shocked the local community, had sparked demands for swift justice. Following the investigation, police filed charges against multiple suspects, but only one was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
Court officials stated that the judgment sends a strong message against violence targeting children, while human rights groups have urged for continued vigilance in protecting vulnerable minors from abuse.
Security was tight around the courthouse during the verdict announcement, as family members of the victim and local residents gathered in anticipation.
