Holy Ashura being observed today

Liberty News Desk

Holy Ashura, the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram, is being observed today with due religious solemnity across Bangladesh, as in other Muslim-majority countries. The word Ashura means ‘tenth’, and this day has held deep spiritual significance since the dawn of creation due to various historic events.

Most notably, on this day, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), embraced martyrdom at the battle of Karbala on the banks of the Euphrates. His supreme sacrifice remains a profound symbol of grief, sacrifice, and steadfastness for Muslims worldwide.

On this day, Muslims in Bangladesh offer special prayers, observe fasting, and engage in various voluntary acts of worship. Members of the Shia community bring out traditional Tazia processions to commemorate Imam Hussain’s (RA) martyrdom.

Marking the occasion, the Islamic Foundation has organised special discussions and prayer sessions at the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram. Today is also a public holiday in Bangladesh in observance of Ashura.

On this solemn occasion, President Md. Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus have conveyed messages to the nation. In his message, the Chief Adviser called upon everyone to embrace the true spirit of Ashura in their hearts and to play a proactive role in upholding truth and justice in society.
